Long Market
The Long
Market (Długi Targ) is merely a wide street in the
extention of Long
Street. It is the historic heart of Gdansk and is with its many
decorative facades and houses the most popular spot to be visited
by tourists.
The square is surrounded by beautifully decorated merchant
houses and palaces. In the west you can find the nice architecture
of the Main Town
Hall. On the northern side the beautiful white Artus Court
(Dwór Artusa) is situated. This house was home to the
merchant brotherhoods of Gdansk and can be visited as part of the
Gdansk History Museum. In front of the Artus Court stand the
Fountain of Neptune (Fontana Neptuna), which was built in
1633.
On the east side the road towards the Motlawa River is crossed by
the Green Gate (Zielona Brama), which was built between
1564-1568 and forms the end of the Royal Way.
The square is packed with restaurants and cafés, and is often frequented by street artists and street vendors.
